28th June 2010. – In the summer heat the electricity bill can cause a very unpleasant surprise to those homeowners whose houses are not properly insulated.
However, in a house which has good insulation the charges of air-conditioning, so the energy fee of the use of air-conditioner can be reduced by almost 50-70 percent.
„In our experience the majority of people who renovate their homes basically think of wintertime when they choose a sufficiently thick facade thermal insulation. So, it usually surprises them when the temperature is more pleasant after the renovation than before, not only in the winter but in the summertime also. That is why, the widely spread air conditioning appliances shall be operated for less time, with this the power consumption will decrease by 250-400 kW and the related charges with 13-20 thousand Forint”.-said Gábor Csokló, the technical director of Masterplast Group Ltd.
The annual energy need of an average building with a size of 70-80 m2 and with tent roof is almost 310-350 kWh/m2. The need of heating and domestic hot water of such an estate is 280-350 thousands Forint per year, besides the operating of an air conditioning appliance in such buildings is 20-30 thousand Forint monthly.
The renovation of such a building can be carried out from 2,4-2,8 million Forint: the thermal insulation of the attic with 20 cm thick mineral wool, the insulation of the facade with 12 cm facade insulation system, the change of the doors and windows, the modernization of the heating system with a regulatory in every room and with modern combined boiler can be renewed. By this the annual energy need of the building (heating, use of hot water) can be reduced to 100 kW/m2. „By taking into consideration the prices of energy sources today, we can save 190-225 thousand forint annually. The operational cost of an air-conditioning appliance during the summer months can be approximately 20-30 thousand Forint per month, while in an appropriately insulated building 50-70 percent of this amount can be saved during one summer, which can be 40-60 thousand Forint- added Gábor Csokló.
If the building is insulated inappropriately, despite the other measures, the building overheats that is why the operational costs of the air conditioning appliances are going to be higher. For the optimal temperature, shading is required on the doors and windows which are exposed to constant sunlight and roof insulation which is applied by heat reflective surface is also required. Furthermore, it provides significant technical protection if the building has heat storage mass (namely solid, heavy walls, ceilings which store the cold like a battery), if the sunny surfaces are light-coloured they reflect a certain amount of heat or if there is an appropriately well-ventilating air gap behind the sunny surface. Primarily in the summer, beyond the technical evolving of the building, there is a great importance on the using habits also. In the summer heat- as in the winter also, the airing should take a short time. It is worth to air the building in the early morning cool period.
Background information:
The thermal insulation systems that can be sold in Hungary shall have CE or EME mark (grading permit for construction), besides the certification of factory production control is also needed. Moreover, if they would like to apply the system by middle-high buildings, then the behaviour against fire have to be examined also. For this a so-called SBI test has to be done by the Construction Quality Control Innovative Non-profit Ltd. (EMI) and a facade flame-propagation examination. After this the EMI gives out the Fire Safety Compliance Certificate based on the received data.
